Mission

The Carl A. Fields Center for Equality and Cultural Understanding strives to empower members of the University community as they seek to learn about self, understand the breadth of cultural and social differences among us, and build the skills needed to create and lead a more just world.

Vision

To help actualize Princeton’s Statement on Diversity and Community, the Fields Center works to:

· create a greater sense of community and improve the quality of life for Princeton students;

· create and promote a sense of belonging that permeates throughout all aspects of the Princeton community; and,

· foster the growth and unity of the Princeton community by advancing student learning through programs and experiences that integrate self-awareness, multicultural and intercultural communication skills, social justice education and leadership opportunities.

We undertake this work with the specific goals of:

· increasing understanding and mutual respect on campus by crossing perceived boundaries such as race, religion, political ideology and cultural lines;

· addressing forms of prejudice and discrimination, including the dynamics that systemically exclude or oppress individuals and groups because of their race, gender, age, sexual orientation, physical ability and economic or social class;

· bringing diverse groups of people together to engage in purposeful dialogue to create mutual understanding;

· working to empower and educate individuals and institutions within the University community to develop, implement and support systems of inclusion; and,

· providing service and leadership opportunities so that students and others can contribute to the world in positive ways by helping end conflict and build communities.
